The dignity of portrait {dignidad y retrato}

El significado de la vida es ver. Hui Neng

In a perfect world, the photographer establishes a bond with the subject, even for a fleeting instant among the crowd. Portraits stem from that intimacy. The photographer disappears, light goes through him and sling over the subject. A brief spatial-temporal loop happens and in its return, truth is enveloped by the renounce to improve what already is. Finally, the image is given a format, framed in order that the contemplative eye cannot avoid its nerve center -the soul- neither the message that approaches with the burning desire of conveying itself.

Portrait is, in my opinion, the most complex of all arts. It has nothing to do with the time invested in its craft, neither the knowledge about the subject; it’s not even something able to be pursued or premeditated.
It constitutes a tour de force that escapes the dominion of words, in which the natural essence of people and objects manifests, briefly suspended, in such a way that everything lost is found again, like a revelation of everthing else that is there. I find as easy to recognize this in the work of my role models, Edward Steichen and Irving Penn, as difficult to explain in mine.

It’s an instinct, more than a skill. A vector reluctant to the human inclination to own and possess, enemy of the ego that lurks in the depths of the subjet until it builds a clean-cut image inside, at least for that who can capture it to see it in the aftermath.

That is my instinct, my nature. An intuition of truth. Going through what I see, being the light that blazes through.
The abuse of retouching and photographic manipulation has turned the core and beauty of portrait into a grotesque misogynist show -especially ill-gotten when the subject is a woman- cast to the wind in the name of the victims supposedly claimed to be those defended.
Far from intuitive observation, preserving its dignity, we have come to face as insensitive object, submissive and fake.

I leaf through magazines noticing a growing build up of shame and deep indignation towards the cruelest perversion that can be: the perversion of beauty, which bewildering gift is to transmute our flaws into unique traits, resembling itself in who looks, as an ephemeral, yet ineffable act of communion. Something unforgettable.

I’m driven by the urgency to repair the lost identity of iconic celebrity through portraiture. True gaze, as it happens in the moment, clean from the bizarre and obscene redundancy of the discourse that attempts to explain it (or alienate it into oblivion), without Photoshop, quiet, prosthetic-free. To give it the classy look back, the acquired taste, the elegance and the wide-open future of the earliest, glorious age of cinema. An unbound horizon. An act of atonement, in these times that everyone owning a camera claims to be a photographer, restoring its condition of beautifully marketable luxury object.
